About this Training

This technical training course provides a structured introduction to the design and fabrication of pressure vessels according to EN 13445, with attention to the main requirements of the European pressure equipment framework.

The program is designed to help participants understand the structure of the standard, its scope, material requirements, design principles, fabrication rules, inspection and testing criteria, and the main steps related to PED compliance and CE marking.

The course includes 20 hours of technical content. Participants will have 90 days access to the Virtual Campus to complete the course.

The course is delivered 100% online and on-demand, allowing participants to study at their own pace. Instructor support will be provided through the consultation forum on the Virtual Campus.

Course Outline

This module covers the main technical aspects required to design and fabricate pressure vessels according to EN 13445 and complementary European engineering criteria.

Participants will learn how to understand the structure of the standard, select permitted materials, define design stresses, design main pressure vessel components, apply welding and fabrication requirements, review inspection and testing criteria, and understand the main steps required for PED compliance and CE marking.

The course also includes practical case studies, assimilation questions, design and calculation examples, and lessons learned based on real industrial projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the scope, structure and main parts of the EN 13445 standard.
  • Recognize the hierarchy of European standards and the relationship between ISO, CEN and pressure equipment requirements.
  • Compare EN 13445 with other commonly used pressure vessel design codes, including ASME VIII and AD 2000.
  • Identify permitted materials and understand the key material requirements for pressure vessel applications.
  • Interpret essential mechanical properties, chemical composition requirements and material grouping criteria.
  • Understand brittle fracture considerations and the use of European steels for pressure vessels.
  • Apply the fundamental design principles of EN 13445 to pressure vessel components.
  • Define joint efficiency, design stress and safety factors in accordance with the standard.
  • Review the design requirements for components subject to internal and external pressure.
  • Understand the design considerations for openings, nozzles, flat ends, standard flanges and non-standard flanges.
  • Identify fabrication requirements related to tolerances, alignment, peaking, outer diameter and ovality.
  • Understand welding, forming and postweld heat treatment requirements for pressure vessel fabrication.
  • Review inspection and testing requirements, including non-destructive testing, acceptance criteria and hydrostatic testing.
  • Understand the role of the Pressure Equipment Directive, CE marking categories, conformity assessment modules and notified bodies.

This course is intended for:

  • Graduates and soon-to-be graduates in engineering or technical disciplines
  • Designers involved in pressure vessel design and industrial equipment
  • Freelancers working in mechanical design, calculation or technical support
  • Technicians involved in fabrication, quality, inspection, testing or maintenance activities
  • Engineers responsible for the calculation, design, selection or verification of pressure equipment
  • Professionals working with pressure vessels, static equipment, manufacturing, inspection or European compliance requirements

Prerequisite

Previous knowledge of EN 13445 or pressure vessel design is not required to attend the course.

A general technical background in engineering, industrial equipment, mechanical design, fabrication or inspection will help participants follow the standard requirements and practical examples more effectively.

  • Basic
  • Intermediate

The training is based on a self-paced learning methodology, combining technical explanations with practical design, fabrication and inspection examples.

The course follows a “learn by doing” approach, using assimilation questions, solved case studies and applied examples to reinforce the EN 13445 requirements presented throughout the module.

Participants can review the course content as needed and progress through the lessons according to their own schedule. Instructor support is available during the course through the Virtual Campus consultation forum.
