About this Classroom Training
Adapting fossil power plants to the changing energy landscape is essential for staying competitive as renewable energy grows. This transition helps traditional power plants operate more flexibly, allowing them to integrate with intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. Key improvements include faster load adjustments, quicker start-ups and shutdowns, and advanced grid balancing techniques. By adopting these strategies, power plants can support the increasing use of renewables while maintaining grid stability and reliable electricity supply.
This five-day course explores the operations, performance, and economic aspects of fossil power plants, focusing on flexible operations, reliability benchmarking, and life cycle cost (LCC) analysis. Participants will learn about the challenges and opportunities in modernising fossil power plants, benchmark performance against industry standards, and apply LCC analysis to optimise costs. The course blends theory with practical case studies, equipping participants with the skills to balance flexibility, efficiency, and cost in a changing energy market.
This course will be delivered face-to-face over 5-day, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 32.30 hours in total, 32.30 CPD points.
By the end of this 5 day course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the core components and operational principles of fossil fuel-based power plants.
- Identify challenges and constraints when transitioning to flexible operations.
- Define flexible operations and their increasing importance in modern power systems.
- Assess the impact of flexible operations on efficiency, wear, and asset management.
- Use industry benchmarks to evaluate fossil power plant performance reliability.
- Identify key performance indicators (KPIs) for monitoring efficiency, availability, and downtime.
- Conduct Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis to evaluate economic implications of plant upgrades or changes.
- Understand the cost categories in a plant’s lifecycle and their financial impacts.
- Use modeling techniques to predict LCC and optimise operational and maintenance decisions.
- Develop strategies to balance flexibility, performance reliability, and cost optimisation in plant management.
- Power Plant and Lifecycle Cost Engineers responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of fossil fuel-based power plants by analysing and minimising the total cost of ownership for plant systems.
- Operations Managers managing plant operations, optimising performance and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Reliability and Maintenance Engineers analysing, monitor operational performance to improve equipment reliability and oversee maintenance schedules to ensure critical systems function properly.
- Performance Engineers aim to reduce unexpected failures and increase plant availability.
- Asset Managers in charge on the lifecycle of plant assets, including cost analysis and performance optimisation.
- Project Managers leads projects related to plant upgrades and efficiency improvements.
- Energy and Financial Analysts participate in the evaluation of the energy production and conducting cost-benefit analyses for potential improvements and assess economic viability of the operation strategies.
- Environmental Compliance Officers to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
- Regulatory Affairs Specialists function in compliance with local, national, and international regulations.
- Utility System Operators monitoring and control power generation and distribution systems for stable operation.
- Basic
- Intermediate
