About this Training Course
This 3-day course covers FPSO field development and operations through layup and scrapping, emphasizing the roles and expertise required at each lifecycle stage. It addresses the activities and personnel requirements to take an offshore field from conception to operations and ultimately to disposal of equipment and structures. Designed for both technical and non-technical participants, it provides a structured, end-to-end view of the FPSO lifecycle.
Day 1 establishes foundations: Field Identification & Survey; Sampling; Field Development Costs; Development Options; Vessel/Structure types. Day 2 examines development pathways and critical systems: new build vs. conversion, FPSO equipment, regulations (classification, training, government/IMO), yard choices and specialties. Day 3 focuses on execution and late-life phases: non-negotiable yard requirements, operations (manning, engineering, logistics, special inspections), hydrocarbon contracts, and end-of-field options leading to scrapping and field cleansing.
The course will also address FPSO build and conversion shipyards; offshore yards; subcontractors; equipment vendors; service providers; classification societies; and marine & offshore personnel across design/engineering, planning, procurement, project management, construction, quality control, surveys, commercial, commissioning, and project administration related to conversions and new builds. Each module clarifies roles, interfaces, decision gates, and deliverables across the lifecycle.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the role of FPSOs and related hosts in field development across the lifecycle—from appraisal to lay-up and recycling—in shallow and deep water.
- Differentiate and justify the choice between FPSO/FSO, semisubmersible and fixed platforms for given metocean, reservoir and logistics constraints.
- Apply basic hydrodynamics to estimate motions and loads, and interpret model/tank-test results for open and sheltered waters.
- Outline FPSO delivery routes—conversion versus new build—including tanker screening, yard selection and critical work packages.
- Describe turret and mooring systems and explain export/offtake arrangements and key design trade-offs.
- Read and interpret simple PFDs and identify major topsides systems (separation, gas compression, produced-water treatment, gas injection) and their interfaces.
- Summarise safety and environmental hazards and the regulatory framework (flag/coastal state, IMO) including the role of classification societies.
- Detail FPSO start-up, routine operations and special inspections (in-water, subsea, mooring, well).
This course is intended for:
- Organizations:
- FPSO build & conversion shipyards; offshore oil-rig building yards; offshore vessel-building yards; offshore construction companies; subcontractors; offshore equipment vendors; offshore service providers; classification societies; marine & offshore SMEs personnel.
- Roles/Functions (FPSO conversion & new-build):
- Design & engineering; planning; procurement; project management; engineering production; vessel construction; quality control; equipment & vessel surveys; commercial; commissioning; project administration.
- Also suitable for non-engineers:
- Insurance brokers; legal and financial professionals; government bodies/regulators.
- Basic
This course employs case studies, multimedia, and expert insights to illustrate FPSO design, operations, and regulatory requirements. Participants will engage in discussions and real-world examples to enhance their understanding of FPSO systems and offshore production processes.
Your expert course instructor has been involved in the Oil and Gas industry for over 28 years in several different roles commencing as a second deck officer on FPSO’s and moving through the industry from deck officer to Master, OIM and Field Superintendent. He has also been in charge of semisubmersible and fixed production platforms as field superintendent before moving ashore into senior management roles. On completion of industry specific activities, he moved to teaching roles at South Tyneside Maritime College in the department of marine and simulation and presented live courses to maritime students from cadet to Master. Prior to returning to Perth in March 2019, he was training manager for a subsidiary of Gaz Transport and Technigaz of France.
He has a Master Class 1 certificate with endorsements for hazardous cargoes and a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration as well as multiple course certificates required to operate FPSO’s, platforms and semisubmersible facilities. Your expert course instructor has been involved in the preparation of national standards for Safety Cases (Australia); Designing and structural setup of competency-based training systems in South East Asia. He was also involved in the development of minimum standards, competency profiles position based and preparation and implementation of training plans to ensure competency in the local staff in Asian operations.
He was part of the development team for minimum standards of offshore safety in Australian offshore operations including the implementation of the Common Safety Training Program (CSTP). He was also involved in implementing training plans for both simulator and classroom-based courses in LNG operations and cargo tank design and construction.

Learn what past participants have said about EnergyEdge training courses
This training has provided me with knowledge of basic design of FPSO which is useful for my daily task. By understanding the concept of developing an FPSO, I further value other disciplines or party involvement in the FPSO overall design.
Senior Engineer Metering, MISC Berhad
This training course is great for both technical and non-technical who wants to have an overall view on how the oil and gas upstream works and how FPSOs fit in that upstream ecosystem.
Engineer Marine, MISC Berhad
As a non-technical person, I found this course interesting because apart from the basic introduction to FPSO, the trainer also taught basic technical subjects such as hydrodynamics, drilling, and topside processing systems.
