About this Training

As countries and companies accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, geothermal energy stands out for its baseload capacity and smaller land footprint than wind or solar. This introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of geothermal energy fundamentals for those looking to enter or transition into the industry.

Through interactive lectures, global case studies, and practical exercises, participants will gain literacy on geothermal energy and its global potential, the play-based exploration workflow for finding resources, drilling and subsurface technologies, surface infrastructure decisions, and economic considerations. The course will equip participants across technical with awareness of how geothermal projects progress from initial exploration through early development phases. Participants will exit better prepared to contribute to strategic and economic decisions in their own geothermal organizations and assets. With an experienced instructor well-versed in translating oil and gas capabilities to geothermal, this course offers the perfect springboard for pursuing additional training or projects in unlocking the nearly limitless heat beneath our feet.

Upon completion of the course, the participants are able to:

  • Discover the role of geothermal energy in the global energy system
  • Identify the additional sustainable energy production potential of geothermal projects
  • Recognize which countries are currently leading in geothermal developments and why
  • Examine the main sources and reservoirs of geothermal energy
  • Analyze the differences between fracture and matrix geothermal reservoirs
  • Learn the importance of matrix porosity in sedimentary rocks for geothermal projects
  • Discuss how to improve the evaluation of geothermal exploration projects
  • Practice how to evaluate geothermal exploration projects according to the play-based geothermal exploration workflow (PBGE)
  • Explain how to deliver geothermal heat and power production projects in various geological settings
  • Demonstrate subsurface and surface technologies and development options
  • Understand why certain geothermal projects are more successful than others
  • Apply the basics of geothermal economic evaluations
  • Predict the outlook for geothermal energy in the decades ahead
  • Illustrate the main challenges and technical risks involved in harnessing geothermal energy

The Geothermal Exploration and Development course is an introductory level training course which is aimed at subsurface exploration and development professionals who have experience in the petroleum Industry and require re-skilling in sustainable Geo-Energy E&P. It is also recommended for any other junior and senior staff involved in new sustainable Geo-Energy Projects.

  • Geoscience and engineering professionals – who work in a geothermal exploration project teams, across the spectrum from new ventures (exploration business development), prospect identification and maturation and appraisal.
  • Field Development and engineering professionals – who are in charged with new geothermal development project of various sizes.
  • Technical staff from government energy ministries and public organizations – who are involved in sustainable subsurface energy projects as part of their energy transition goals
  • Professionals from well and facility engineering and planning – who are involved now or in the future in geothermal projects
  • Business development and finance professionals – who are investing in or providing support for sustainable Geo-Energy projects
  • Basic
  • Intermediate

Your expert course leader draws on more than 35 years of experience developing, managing, reviewing and directing subsurface projects in all aspects of the energy business: from exploration business development (new ventures), through prospect maturation and drilling, to the appraisal of discoveries and field development. He has more than 31 years of experience with Shell International, accompanied and followed by 15 years of teaching Geo-Energy at university (FAU, Germany). He has also been consulting to energy companies and government organisations in the United Kingdom, continental Europe and North America. He was accountable for safety performance in Shell Europe for exploration & development geoscience operations and well delivery with a well-established safety record. He has in-depth experience in in R&D activities as scientific researcher, research manager, and product manager for software-based geoscience technologies including development, deployment and commercialization. He developed and deployed digital solutions for decision-based planning in subsurface projects in Shell. Moreover, he accomplished at formulating competitive strategies in business, R&D and technology deployment, translating them into actionable tactics and results. One of them, the cloud-based OSDU open source data platform development is now a Billion USD technology venture with a consortium of 230 companies from across the energy and IT industry. He also developed and executed Shell’s Graduate Training Programs as part of the Learning Organization.

To further optimise your learning experience from our courses, we also offer individualized “One to One” coaching support for 2 hours post training. We can help improve your competence in your chosen area of interest, based on your learning needs and available hours. This is a great opportunity to improve your capability and confidence in a particular area of expertise. It will be delivered over a secure video conference call by one of our senior trainers. They will work with you to create a tailor-made coaching program that will help you achieve your goals faster.
