About this Classroom Training
Hydrogen is considered to be a key component in the transition towards low to zero emission in the energy sector. Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier and a widely used resource in the chemical industry. In order to decarbonize existing hydrogen use, clean hydrogen must be used. Hydrogen, as a chemical molecule, is perfectly suitable to store large amounts of energy, even for longer times and to transport energy between countries and even to enable the use of renewable energies across industry sector boundaries. One option to obtain low emission hydrogen is via water electrolysis using low emission or renewable energies as main input resource.
This three-day classroom course provides an in-depth overview of the various electrolyzer types. Working principles and real-world systems will be introduced and discussed. In addition, the interfaces towards upstream inputs, electricity, water and space as well as towards downstream outputs such as hydrogen purification, compression, storage and transport will be discussed. Relevant regulations, codes and standards and requirements for certification of an electrolyzer plant will complete the program next to economic considerations. There will be ample room for addressing individual questions and needs with interactive practical exercises.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the technological attributes and options for green hydrogen production based on electrolysis of water.
- Recognise the context and the system boundaries of electrolyzers, their limitations and ways to mitigate.
- Explore the associated economic analysis for electrolyzer based hydrogen production, including CAPEX, OPEX.
- Support qualified decisions and challenge paradigms around hydrogen production technology and economy.
- Identify the critical infrastructure and technical configuration required for green hydrogen including transportation networks and grid connectivity.
Participants from the following PROFESSIONS will find this course applicable:
- Engineers and Scientists such as chemical engineers; mechanical engineers, electrical engineers; materials scientists and researchers in hydrogen production and electrolysis development.
- Energy Industry Professionals such as energy analysts and consultants; renewable energy project developers; utility professionals interested in hydrogen integration.
- Environmental and Sustainability Specialists such as environmental engineers; sustainability managers; professionals working on green energy and carbon reduction initiatives.
Participants from the following INDUSTRY SECTORS will find this course applicable:
- Hydrogen Industry Stakeholders such as representatives from hydrogen production companies; hydrogen infrastructure developers; managers and engineers from companies exploring hydrogen applications.
- Technology Providers and Manufacturers such as suppliers of electrolysis equipment and components.
- Utility and Power Generation Professionals such as utility company managers; power plant operators exploring hydrogen integration options.
- Policymakers and regulators involved in hydrogen and clean energy strategies.
- Those involved in planning and executing large-scale hydrogen projects such as on-site hydrogen production project developers (oil & gas sector) and project managers, including large hydrogen usage industries (refining, ammonia, steelmaking, heavy transport refuelling etc.), renewable power project developers or owners.

Your expert instructor possesses a Dipl.-Ing. (Univ.) in Materials Science from the University Erlangen Nürnberg in Germany, an MBA from Henley Management College in the UK, and holds the prestigious title of Six Sigma Black Belt. With a remarkable career spanning more than 27 years, he is recognized as an esteemed authority in the field of Hydrogen Technologies.
His professional journey includes a 5-year tenure as a scientific researcher at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Baden Württemberg, Germany (ZSW). He then embarked on a noteworthy 14-year career at SGL Carbon, a global leader in carbon and graphite manufacturing, where he played various pivotal roles. His primary focus was on the development and production of Gas Diffusion Media, a crucial component of membrane electrode assemblies for hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzers.
Following his tenure at SGL Carbon, he has spent 8 significant years with BMW AG, serving as a Technology Manager within the hydrogen fuel cell passenger car program, known as iX5 Hydrogen. In this pivotal role, he held responsibility for overseeing quality and safety management across the entire hydrogen system. This encompassed tanks, hydrogen supply systems, fuel cell systems, and in-house hydrogen infrastructure. His contributions also extend to his work with the Hydrogen Academy, where he has created educational materials. Some of these materials fall under their copyright and cover a wide range of topics related to hydrogen, including the hydrogen value chain, hydrogen economy, hydrogen generation (including electrolyzers), hydrogen storage and transport, fuel cell technology, and various industrial applications of hydrogen, such as green steel and ammonia.
He has conducted professional training sessions on this material at three different locations in both German and English languages, each spanning 8 hours, for clients of the Hydrogen Academy. Additionally, he delivered a 12-hour industrial training program on hydrogen introduction, covering similar topics, for a training company located in northern Germany. Furthermore, he has earned recognition as a tentative trainer (successfully passing all assessments) for Hydrogen Technology, Quality, and Safety Management at TÜV Süd Akademie GmbH. Over a span of 3 years, he has been actively engaged as a freelance educator, offering comprehensive courses that encompass the entire hydrogen value chain. These courses cater to a diverse audience, including academic and industrial professionals.
