About this Training Course
This comprehensive 5-day course provides practical knowledge and hands-on guidance for professionals involved in the commissioning, testing, and maintenance of HV electrical power systems. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of industry best practices, safety protocols, and testing methodologies essential for ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of electrical infrastructure.
The course emphasizes the critical importance of systematic planning and meticulous preparation throughout the entire project lifecycle—from initial engineering through commissioning and operational handover. Participants will explore a wide range of testing techniques, maintenance strategies, and safety considerations for all components of modern electrical systems, including motors, generators, transformers, switchgear, cables, protection systems, and grounding networks. Special attention is given to emerging concerns in the industry, such as arc flash hazards and power quality issues, providing participants with up-to-date knowledge to address these challenges effectively in their professional environments.
By the end of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Develop and implement comprehensive commissioning plans for electrical systems of varying scales and complexities
- Establish performance specifications that balance technical requirements with economic feasibility
- Select and apply appropriate field-testing methodologies for electrical distribution systems, rotating machines, transformers, switchgear, and cable networks
- Evaluate and implement strategic maintenance approaches—corrective, preventive, and predictive—based on specific system requirements and organizational constraints
- Conduct AC and DC testing of electrical equipment according to industry standards and interpret results accurately
- Manage the critical handover, acceptance, and transition-to-operations phases of electrical projects
- Assess arc flash hazards and develop appropriate safety protocols and mitigation strategies for electrical maintenance programs
- Apply power quality monitoring techniques to identify, analyze, and resolve harmonic issues in electrical networks
- Navigate grounding system challenges through proper testing and measurement techniques

Your Expert Instructor is a registered professional engineer and has extensive experience in substation design, power system studies, power quality audits, EMF and grounding design, field testing and EHS program settings. He has managed and executed more than 150 engineering projects on substation design EMF audits and power system studies and analyses, EMF audits and grounding audits, for major electrical utilities, mines, oil and gas, data centers, industrial and commercial facilities in Canada and the United States.
Your Expert Instructor has various IEEE publications, has served as a technical reviewer for many IEEE journals in power systems and control systems, and is the chair of the Industry Application Chapter (IAS) for IEEE Toronto Section. He remains a very active member for the IEEE substation committee of IEEE Std. 81 ground testing (WGE6) and IEEE Std. 80 ground design (WGD7). A certified electrical safety trainer by GE Corporate and a Canadian Standard Association (CSA) committee member at the mining advisory panel for electrical safety, he also taught many technical courses all over Canada to industrial customers, electrical consultants as well as to electrical utilities customers. He received his M.Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of New Brunswick and his MBA from Laurier School of Business in Waterloo. He is a certified professional engineer in the provinces of Ontario and Alberta.
