About this Training

This 3-day training course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Storage Resource Management System (SRMS) and its application to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects. Over three days, participants will learn how to analyze site capacity under various development concepts, predict injection rates, and anticipate commercial outcomes prior to major investment decisions.

The course covers the entire process of CCS projects, from initial basin screening through to full site characterization, development, and operation. It offers practical methodologies for consistent application of quantitative analysis of storage volume and site integrity, fully compatible with the SPE SRMS guidelines. Participants will engage in presentations by an expert instructor, syndicate and individual technical exercises, and optional assessment of their own projects.

Throughout the course, attendees will gain insights into delivering objective SRMS volumetric estimates, designing data acquisition strategies for site appraisal and operation, and understanding regulatory reporting obligations for safe storage. The course integrates key industry case examples and provides participants with digital materials including a course manual and customized Excel spreadsheets for exercises.

This course is also available through Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) format.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Master the application of the SRMS system for consistent and objective assessment of CO2 storage capacity and site integrity across various project stages.
  • Develop skills in analyzing site capacity under different development concepts and predicting injection rates to anticipate commercial outcomes.
  • Gain proficiency in designing data acquisition strategies for site appraisal, commercial decisions, and operational monitoring of stored CO2.
  • Understand the interplay between static and dynamic site volumes, including geomechanical limits to safe storage and dynamic modeling of CO2 injection scenarios.
  • Learn to optimize site monitoring plans and understand the monitoring and modeling cycle for long-term CO2 storage management.

This course is designed for professionals with 5-10 years of experience in the petroleum industry or CCS sector. It targets exploration, appraisal, development, and reservoir engineering professionals looking to deepen their understanding of CCS projects and SRMS application. The course is also highly relevant for regulators responsible for managing CCS operations in their jurisdiction, as well as geoscience-educated financial and management staff involved in carbon accounting. It’s particularly suited for petroleum industry professionals seeking to transition into CCS projects and expand their reporting roles.

  • Exploration Geologists/Geophysicists
  • Reservoir and EOR Engineers
  • CCS Project Managers
  • Environmental Compliance Officers
  • Carbon Accounting Specialists
  • Energy Transition Strategists
  • Reserves Estimation Engineers
  • Regulatory Affairs Managers
  • Petroleum Engineers transitioning to CCS
  • CCS Site Characterization Specialists
  • Geomechanical Engineers
  • Basin Analysis Experts
  • Intermediate

Pre-requisite: The course is aimed at exploration, appraisal, development, reservoir engineering, and management professions with more than 5 to 10 years petroleum or CCS experience.

  • Both syndicate (group) and individual technical exercises are incorporated throughout the course.
  • Key industry case examples are integrated into the presentations and exercises.
  • Participants receive a digital package containing: Course manual; Customized Excel spreadsheets for exercises

Your expert course leader is an expert in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) with over 30 years of experience in the international oil industry. He holds a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Cambridge University and has significant expertise in Storage Resource Management Systems (SRMS), particularly in CO2 storage site evaluation and management. His contributions include developing a 3D probabilistic approach for subsurface fluid distribution and establishing safe geomechanical operation principles for large-volume fluid injection. He has worked with major companies like BP and BHP, applying his extensive knowledge to address the challenges of CO2 storage. He is also actively involved in technical review committees for CCS projects, enhancing his influence in the field.
