About this Classroom Training
The global energy sector is undergoing a profound transformation as governments and industries seek reliable, low-carbon energy solutions to meet rising electricity demand, strengthen energy security, and achieve net-zero commitments. While renewables continue to expand rapidly, many countries now recognise nuclear power as an essential part of a balanced energy mix. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are emerging as one of the most promising technologies, attracting significant investment, policy support, and commercial interest worldwide.
This comprehensive 5-day programme gives participants a practical and strategic understanding of modern nuclear power plants and the evolving SMR landscape. It begins with the fundamentals: reactor generations and designs, the global status of nuclear energy, reactor physics, the fuel cycle, and plant operations. It then covers nuclear safety, security and safeguards, severe accident management, radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and environmental effects, along with the application of AI, digital tools, and robotics in power generation and regulatory processes.
Building on this foundation, participants explore Generation IV and SMR design categories, fuel technologies, and waste management, followed by the commercial side of SMR deployment: technology providers, economics and factory production, business and financing models, siting, and licensing. The course closes with emerging trends, supply chain opportunities, and the challenges facing SMRs in future energy systems. Learning is reinforced through case studies, including the UAE nuclear programme and Finland’s Onkalo repository, calculation exercises, a public online PWR simulator, and a team-based SMR assessment using AI tools. In the final session, participants develop a business model and siting proposal for a first SMR, tailored to the country where the course is delivered. Participants will gain the knowledge needed to understand, evaluate, and contribute to the next generation of nuclear energy developments.
By the end of this 5 days training course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the fundamental principles of nuclear power generation and describe the evolution of nuclear reactor technologies.
- Describe the structure, systems, and key components of nuclear power plants and explain how these systems interact to safely generate electricity.
- Interpret the role of nuclear energy in the global energy transition and evaluate its contribution to energy security, decarbonisation, and sustainable development goals.
- Apply fundamental reactor physics concepts and reactor operations to understand overall nuclear plant performance.
- Assess nuclear safety, security, and safeguards frameworks and identify key measures used to prevent, mitigate, and manage nuclear incidents and severe accidents.
- Evaluate radioactive waste management strategies and environmental considerations.
- Differentiate between Generation IV and SMR technology categories and designs.
- Analyse the commercial, economic, and business aspects of SMR deployment compared with large reactors.
- Examine regulatory, licensing, siting, safeguards, financing, and decommissioning considerations associated with the development and operation of SMRs.
- Assess future trends, opportunities, and challenges in the nuclear and SMR sectors and evaluate the potential role of SMRs within national and regional energy strategies.
This course has been designed for professionals working to further develop their careers to keep up to date on energy transition:
- Nuclear Engineers seeking to enhance their understanding of SMR.
- Energy Analysts interested in the technical aspects of nuclear energy production.
- Power Plant Operators looking to broaden their knowledge of reactor systems.
- Environmental Engineers focusing on sustainable energy solutions, including nuclear power.
- Policy Makers and Regulators responsible in energy policy development and nuclear safety.
- Project Managers working on planning and implementation of nuclear energy projects.
- Researchers exploring the advancements in nuclear reactor technology.
- Energy Consultants advising on the integration of nuclear power into energy portfolios.
- Basic
- Intermediate
This programme employs a blended learning approach that combines interactive lectures, industry case studies, practical exercises, simulations, group discussions, and team-based activities to maximise participant engagement and learning outcomes. Participants will gain a strong foundation in nuclear reactor technologies including Small Modular Reactors (SMR), nuclear safety, waste management, power plant operations through expert-led sessions and real-world examples. Practical calculation exercises, power plant simulation, and technology assessment workshops will reinforce technical concepts, while collaborative discussions and case studies will encourage critical thinking and knowledge sharing. Quizzes, presentations, and facilitated reviews will be used to assess understanding and ensure effective application of learning in professional environments.
